Ironworkers Local 765 History
Ironworkers and Rodmen Local 765 was granted Charter from the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Ironworkers in May 1955 starting with 27 Charter members who transferred from Toronto Local 721. Due to strong leadership of the Business Managers, Presidents and Business Agents who have led the Local, we currently sit at 700+ active and proud members.
After renting office space until 1982, Local 765 purchased their first Union Hall and stayed there until the summer of 2011 when they acquired their first Training Center to benefit the membership.
Another milestone was reached in 2012 when we were granted certification by the Canadian Welding Bureau as a certified testing facility.
In 2013 we hosted our first ever Ontario Provincial Apprenticeship Skills Competition.
In 2014 we earned the prestigious Eagle Award from the International for our continuing efforts to supply the membership and contractors with the best trained Ironworkers and Rodmen.
Our Training Delivery Agreement with the province of Ontario came in 2019, and we now teach all levels of both the Structural & Ornamental Ironworker and Reinforcing Rodworker apprenticeship programs here in our own Training Center.
The Training Center has seen continuous improvements and upgrades, including the addition of a new 3750 ft2 shop in 2019. The welding shop now has 14 booths and is equipped for SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW welding as well as oxy-acetylene, oxy-propane, and plasma cutting. The Training Center also boasts reinforcing, structural steel, and ornamental mock-ups, a Broderson industrial crane, telescopic forklift, overhead crane, and scissor- and boom-supported elevated work platforms to further the training and education of our members.
